Apply patient payments automatically

Can applying patient payments be automated? It is very time consuming and tedious to apply pt pmts through Payments/Cash Collections and uncheck the charges boxes so the pmt is applied to the older charge first...then apply the pmt. Please tell me there's a better way to do this.
